Having just written about the rather more serious Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, it’s a nice counterpoint to see this lighthearted photo of the actors most famous for portraying his literary creations Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Nigel Bruce (left) and Basil Rathbone are seen here enjoying themselves away from the set with a passel of wriggling wiener dogs.
Bruce and Rathbone were both well-known in the Hollywood community as dog-lovers, and this poolside photo showing the two men cavorting with Bruce’s dachshunds is very sweet. Not to be outdone, Rathbone and his wife had a large furry menagerie, too — see photos of the couple through the years with their many dogs here.
